The Wellington Chapter of the Women's Infrastructure Network is pleased to present the 'Te Kukuwai o Toa Wetland showcase' event on Wednesday 29 November, sponsored by Wellington Water, GHD and CIWEM.
Wellington Water recently completed Te Kukuwai o Toa wetland (located in Elsdon Park in Porirua) to manage and treat stormwater intercepted from the Porirua catchment before being discharged into the harbour. This wetland acts both as a flood retention system and combined with the high flow bypass pipeline protection for the wetland during extreme events.
A collaborative approach to the design and implementation saw Wellington Water, GHD (with partners Morphum Environmental), Ngāti Toa and Porirua City Council work together to deliver this community space. We have Lyndie McMillan, (Project Director, Wellington Water), Kat Dever-Tod (Water Engineer, GHD) and Sharli-Jo Solomon (Iwi Monitor, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira) joining us to discuss the project, why it was needed and the challenges they worked together to overcome in this panel discussion.
Kat Dever-Tod, GHD, BEng (Hons) – Water Engineer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington).
Since graduating from the University of Canterbury in 2020, Kat has worked on a range of wastewater and stormwater upgrades projects for Wellington Water and has been primarily involved in construction management and design coordination. Kat has a keen interest in projects focussed on increasing the resilience of communities through strategic improvement of existing infrastructure networks and integration of green infrastructure. Kat enjoys working on projects with a range of stakeholders and large, multi-disciplinary teams, requiring a high degree of collaboration.
Sharli-Jo Solomon is an Iwi Monitor at Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira and represents Ngāti Toa Rangatira on the Mauri Tūhono ki Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui working group and Te Awarua-o-Porirua Whaitua Committee.
Sharli-Jo has a lifelong passion for the environment and believes it is the environment, our harbours, coast and rivers, that make Porirua and the region so beautiful.
Lyndie McMillan is currently a Project Director with the Major Projects Team at Wellington Water.
